Calisthenics is training with your own body weight as the resistance. It has come to be synonymous with certain gymnastic movements such as muscle-ups, levers, and handstands. At our gym in Fulham, London, we have been coaching calisthenics at a high level since we opened, and it has become part of our specialty services.

Calisthenics is more than isolated bodyweight strength training – it’s functional movement training. The moves use all of the stabilising muscles and give you functional strength: the ability to move yourself through space with power and grace. Many calisthenics movements are also incorporated into CrossFit classes.

There is a strong skill component: calisthenics is really learning to master the use of your own body. As such, it’s a fundamental aspect of our training. It can be done in a calisthenics workout class type format with more repetition and less recovery; this is harder on the muscles and metabolism, or you can spend time looking at specific movements. Most programs include both of these aspects.

Progression with calisthenics moves means training to do harder and harder variations. At all times, proper form is of the utmost importance.

Patience and commitment are also necessary, because joint strength, robustness, and mobility take a long time to develop. The joints recover and adapt on a slower schedule than muscle tissue.

Achievement of these moves in a safe progression is a great way to motivate yourself to keep learning.
