Olympic weightlifting is the sport of performing two specific weightlifting movements: the snatch, and the clean and jerk (the clean and snatch is no longer an official Olympic lift).
In the UK, there is increasing interest in learning Olympic weightlifting. London has many gyms with Olympic bars available. But to train properly, you need not just facilities but also proper coaching. At Motus Strength’s Fulham/Chelsea gym, our specialist coaches have been running Olympic lifting courses, and doing one-on-one coaching for those who want to learn Olympic lifts, for years.
These are not easy lifts. The moves are very technical and athletic. You need to lift safely by being technically proficient at it. Mobility, balance, and skill need to be developed at the same time as explosive power.
The rewards are also high. Because the Olympic lifts are power lifts, they use a lot of energy. If you do many repetitions, they are very metabolically demanding. This is why they’re used in CrossFit to increase work capacity. The snatch and the clean and jerk produce the most change in the muscles.
Learning Olympic lifts thus results in strength, fitness and power.
Once you’ve mastered the technique, you can also compete with other trainees, because the form is standardised.
